Jasprit Bumrah has made history, becoming the first Indian pacer to top the ICC Test rankings following his impressive performance against England in Visakhapatnam. The 30-year-old’s nine-wicket haul in the match propelled him past top bowlers like Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada, and Ravichandran Ashwin, making him only the fourth Indian to reach the number one spot. Other Indians who have previously held this position include Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Singh Bedi.
Bumrah’s rise to the top ends Ashwin’s 11-month reign as the World No. 1 Test bowler. Ashwin, currently on 499 Test wickets, has now dropped to third place. Bumrah’s current rating stands at 881 points, with Ashwin (904) and Jadeja (899) being the only Indian bowlers to have ever accumulated higher ratings. Ashwin and Jadeja also share the unique distinction of being jointly ranked No. 1 in March 2017.
In the batting rankings, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal has jumped 37 places to 29th after his impressive double-century in the first innings against England, while Shubman Gill moved up 14 spots to a career-best 38th following his century in the second innings. England opener Zak Crawley also made gains, moving up eight places to 22nd after scores of 76 and 73.
Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, and Prabhath Jayasuriya Rise in Test Rankings; Zampa and Abbott Make Gains in ODIs
Rookie leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has climbed 14 places to 70th, and Tom Hartley, who achieved a unique double of at least 50 runs and five wickets in each of his first two Tests, has advanced in both the batting and bowling rankings.
The latest rankings also reflect performances from the one-off Test between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Colombo. Sri Lankan spinner Prabhath Jayasuriya has moved up to a career-best sixth position after his eight-wicket match haul helped secure a 10-wicket victory for his team.
In the ODI rankings, Australia’s Adam Zampa has climbed to third among bowlers, and fast bowler Sean Abbott’s six wickets in the recent series against the West Indies have lifted him 35 places to joint-33rd position.
