ISIS Threatens India-Pakistan T20 World Cup Match; New York Heightens Security

Enhanced Security Measures for T20 Cricket World Cup Amid Potential Threats

New York is ramping up security for the upcoming T20 Cricket World Cup, particularly for the high-profile India-Pakistan match, due to potential threats. Governor Kathy Hochul announced on X that her team is working with federal and local law enforcement to ensure attendee safety, despite no credible threats at this time.

“While there is no credible threat at this time, I’ve directed @nyspolice to elevate security measures & we’ll continue to monitor as the event nears,” Governor Hochul stated. The India-Pakistan game is scheduled for June 9 at Eisenhower Park Stadium in Nassau County, New York. The T20 Cricket World Cup will run from June 1-29, with matches held in nine stadiums across the West Indies and the United States. The inaugural match will see hosts United States face Canada.

Security Heightened at Cricket World Cup Over ISIS Threat

An NYPD bulletin, referenced by ABC News, mentioned pro-ISIS propaganda targeting the India-Pakistan match. This propaganda, reportedly from an ISIS splinter group, raised concerns among law enforcement. The NYPD Intel Bureau’s assessment suggests that extremists might see the Cricket World Cup and related events in NYC as potential targets for violence or disruption, based on recent propaganda and past incidents at large sports venues. This assessment has been shared with regional law enforcement agencies.

Despite no detected plots, law enforcement is taking comprehensive precautions. Organizers expect the 34,000-seat stadium to attract hundreds of thousands of spectators globally. This event marks the first time the US will host the Cricket World Cup. Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated that security preparations have been ongoing for nearly seven months. The threats, initially broad international threats from ISIS-K, have become more specific, though without pinpointing exact locations.

Commissioner Ryder emphasized the seriousness with which all threats are treated, with around 100 additional officers to be deployed at the park. Enhanced security measures will include metal detectors, and spectators will only be allowed to bring clear bags for medical purposes.
