NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Modi praised wrestler Vinesh Phogat. She succeeded at the Paris Olympics. She is the first Indian woman to reach the finals in wrestling.
At a July 4 reception at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi, PM Modi met with Indian gold medalists from the recent Paris Olympics.
PM Modi praises Vinesh Phogat’s historic feat despite her Olympic disqualification.
In addressing the Indian contingent, PM Modi praised Vinesh. He said, “Vinesh is the first Indian woman to reach the wrestling finals. It is a matter of great pride for us all.”
Vinesh’s historic achievement overshadowed something. Officials found her 100 grams over the weight limit on the morning of the championship match. They disqualified her from the women’s 50 kg gold medal contest at the Paris Olympics.
Vinesh appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). She wanted to overturn her disqualification and win a shared silver medal in the 50 kg weight class. Unfortunately, the CAS Ad-Hoc Division dashed her hopes of a medal by rejecting her appeal.
