The Punjab Ranji Trophy team is likely to appoint Wasim Jaffer as their head coach. Even former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait is in the mix. They will likely replace Avishkar Salve. He guided Punjab to win the 2023/24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This was their first domestic title in 30 years.

The Punjab Ranji Trophy team will likely appoint a new head coach before the new domestic season. He will replace Aavishkar Salvi. Punjab is one of the strongest sides in the country. They have Indian stars Arshdeep Singh, Shubman Gill, and Abhishek Sharma. They won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last season.

Jaffer and Tait in Contention for Punjab Head Coach Role; Mandeep Singh Set for Tripura Move

“We have received over 45 applicants for the head coach role of the Punjab senior team. Two of the prominent names are Wasim Jaffer and Shaun Tait. Jaffer is a former India opener. Tait is a former Australia speedster. The process is still underway. A PCA official told the Indian Express, ‘We will announce the name by next week.'”

Jaffer has coached the Uttarakhand and Odisha Ranji teams. He also led the Bangladesh U-19 team. He has also been part of Punjab Kings’ coaching staff on two separate occasions. Jaffer’s tenure with the Uttarakhand team came to a sudden halt. He denied the accusation of communal bias. Former teammates, including Anil Kumble, came to his defense back then.

Shaun Tait’s first coaching job was with Afghanistan. He became their bowling consultant in 2021. He was later appointed as the Pakistan team’s bowling consultant for 12 months in 2022.

Either Jaffer or Tait will replace Aavishkar Salvi as the Punjab team’s head coach. The ex-fast bowler did a great job. He guided the team to victory in the 2023/24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, where they defeated Baroda. This was Punjab’s first domestic trophy in 30 years. Their last win was in the 1992/93 Ranji Trophy. In the 2022/23 season, Salvi led Punjab to the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. They also reached the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Mandeep Singh is likely to move to Tripura.

The Indian Express reports that Mandeep Singh, a senior Punjab batter, will move to Tripura for the 2024/25 season. Mandeep was the captain of the Punjab team that lifted the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023/24.
