Leeds’ poor run looked set to continue when Isaiah Jones capitalized on a defensive save to give the home side the lead after just seven minutes. But the visitors turned things around in a blistering first half.

Summerville equalized from the penalty spot before Patrick Bamford defended Middlesbrough’s return to the Riverside. Emmanuel Latte Lath’s volley from outside the box put Middlesbrough ahead.

Leeds regained the lead in a tense situation before half-time as Wilfried Gnonto fired in from Summerville’s pass and the Italian international was clear in an offside position. But as VAR does not work in the competition, the goal stands.

Summerville’s curling effort into the top corner for his 20th goal of the season gave Leeds a two-goal lead. But they needed it too as Latte Lath’s header ended the season three minutes from time.

“As defenders we would like to make things a little easier, but at the moment it’s just a big win,” Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu said. “He’s still playing two big games. For us, there’s a lot of work to do.”

Leeds’ victory means that even Leicester’s fourth-placed win over Southampton on Tuesday will not mathematically guarantee the Foxes’ promotion.
