The GT captain reached yet another IPL milestone in his team’s away game against DC as Shubman Gill broke Virat Kohli’s record.
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill broke Virat Kohli’s record during match No. 40 of the lucrative Indian Premier League, joining his predecessor Hardik Pandya on a select list. Gujarat Titans, the reigning champions, made their way to the nation’s capital after upsetting Punjab Kings in their last match. On Wednesday, opener Gill earned his 100th IPL cap, taking over as captain of the Gujarat Titans team ahead of the next season, succeeding Hardik.
Prior to playing Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals on the 40th day of the IPL, Gill led GT to four victories in as many games in the 2024 iteration of the lucrative competition. Gill has now made 100 IPL appearances, joining IPL 2024 leaders Hardik, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Pant on the list of Indian players. In the wealthiest T20 competition globally, Gill, at 24 years and 229 days, is the second-youngest and fastest Indian to reach 100 matches. Gill became the youngest Indian to play 100 IPL games as he overtook Kohli at the age of 24. On the exclusive list, Piyush Chawla (26) and Samson (25) come after Kohli.
Shubman Gill on 100 IPL caps: “Means a lot to me.”
“Let’s bowl first. We’ve been chasing well these past few games, so it seems like a fantastic wicket. The emphasis is on today’s match, but it means a lot to me to have played 100 IPL matches. I’ve come a long way, but I still have a long way to go. You should play the way you’re excellent at since there will always be ups and downs in cricket. Gill declared, “We’re playing the same side,” after winning the toss.
Gill’s journey in the IPL
Gujarat Titans signed Gill for their first season after he was released by Kolkata Knight Riders before the 2022 Indian Premier League. During the 2022 season, the Indian batter and the GT franchise hoisted the renowned trophy. Gill finished as the Gujarat-based team’s second-highest run scorer during their championship-winning campaign. With a strike rate of 132.33 and an average of 34.50, Gill scored 483 runs in 16 games.
Gill scored his highest score of 96 against Punjab Kings in 2022 and amassed four half-centuries. The low-scoring IPL 2022 final saw GT defeating Rajasthan Royals. All thanks to Gill’s undefeated 45-run innings. After dominating the batting rankings in the 2023 season, Gill earned his first IPL Orange Cap the previous year. In the IPL 2023 Final, Gill-starrer GT faced off against Chennai Super Kings. Gill acquired the leadership of the team for the next season when Hardik left GT to play for the Mumbai Indians in the 2024 Indian Premier League.
