BCCI invites applications for the role of Indian cricket team head coach: Requirements, deadline and historical overview

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday the commencement of applications for the position of head coach of the Indian men’s national team. The current head coach, Rahul Dravid, is set to conclude his tenure following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Consequently, BCCI has stipulated May 27 as the deadline for interested candidates to submit their applications.

BCCI has delineated the pivotal prerequisites for the prospective head coach:

1. The candidate must be primed for a long-term commitment to Indian cricket, spanning from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2027, encompassing significant events such as the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the ODI World Cup in 2027.

    2. Applicants are required to have participated in a minimum of 30 Test matches and 50 One Day Internationals (ODIs)

    3. Candidates must have held full membership of a Test-playing nation for a minimum of two years.

    4. A minimum of three years’ experience as an Associate Member/Head Coach of an IPL team or equivalent international league/first-class teams/national A team is mandatory.

    5. Applicants must be under 60 years of age and possess BCCI Level 3 certification or its equivalent.

    6. The candidate must exhibit adeptness in handling work pressure and expectations, with a focal point on nurturing a world-class Indian cricket team capable of delivering stellar performances across all formats and conditions.

    7. It is imperative that the new head coach serves as an inspiration to both current and future generations of cricketers through their approach to the game.

    The deadline for applications is May 27, 2024, at 6 pm IST. The selection process will comprise various review stages, including personal interviews and assessments conducted by the BCCI. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has indicated that Rahul Dravid is eligible to reapply for the position, albeit his tenure will not be automatically extended. Additionally, there is openness to the prospect of appointing a foreign coach for the senior men’s national team.
