The Caribbean cricket team etched their name in history by setting a new record for the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup during their match against Afghanistan. The West Indies scored a formidable 92/1 in the first six overs. Surpassing the Netherlands’ previous record of 91/1 set against Ireland a decade ago.
In Gros Islet, St Lucia, West Indies batters delivered a powerful performance against Afghanistan on Wednesday. Amassing a total of 218/5. Nicholas Pooran played a standout innings. Scoring 98 runs off 53 balls and playing a pivotal role in achieving the highest powerplay total in T20 World Cup history.
Pooran’s Heroics Propel West Indies to Record Powerplay Score in T20 World Cup
Brandon King was dismissed early for just seven runs, but Nicholas Pooran and Johnson Charles formed a crucial partnership. Taking the team to 91/1 after the first six overs. Pooran set numerous records during his time at the crease, including hitting the most sixes for West Indies in a T20 World Cup match.
Pooran also scored 36 runs in a single over bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai, equalling the record for the most runs in a T20I over. Prior to this, the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cups was held by the Netherlands with 91/1 against Ireland in the 2014 World Cup. England’s 89/3 against South Africa in the 2016 World Cup is the third highest.
