PCB Insists on Hosting Entire 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, Rejecting Hybrid Model for India
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly decided against a hybrid model for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Insisting all matches, including those involving India, be played in Pakistan. The tournament is scheduled to run from February 19 to March 9, 2025, across three major cities: Karachi, Rawalpindi, & Lahore.
This decision follows PCB’s proposal & a recent inspection by ICC officials, who have expressed satisfaction with the arrangements in place. PCB’s stance contrasts with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI). Preference for India’s matches to be played at neutral venues, as was done during the Asia Cup 2023.
A source within the PCB stated, “We have not opted for the hybrid model. However, we have given this leverage that India’s matches can be played in Lahore only. This way, the team will not be required to move around cities within Pakistan and its security can be well maintained in Lahore.”
PCB’s 2025 Champions Trophy Plan: Lahore to Host Indian Matches, Awaiting Government Approval
The PCB believes this arrangement minimizes logistical and security complications. Offering a more convenient option for Indian fans, given Lahore’s proximity to the Wagah Border.
The proposed schedule allocates at least three matches, including the opening match and a semifinal, to Karachi. Rawalpindi is set to host five matches, including a semifinal, while Lahore will see at least seven matches, including the final.
India’s participation hinges on approval from the Indian government, which has been hesitant to send the cricket team to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, due to security concerns. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be the first major international cricket tournament hosted solely by Pakistan since they co-hosted the 1996 Cricket World Cup with India and Sri Lanka.
