On the first day of the India-Bangladesh Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Yashasvi Jaiswal made history with a remarkable performance. Amidst a top-order collapse, Jaiswal’s 56 off 118 balls provided much-needed stability for India after early dismissals of star batsmen Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, who all fell for single-digit scores.
Jaiswal’s innings marked his eighth half-century in Test cricket, continuing his impressive run of form and ensuring he has scored a fifty in every home Test match of his career so far. His knock set a new world record, breaking the 89-year-old record held by West Indies legend George Headley, who had scored 747 runs in his first 10 home Test innings. Jaiswal now holds the record for the most runs in the first 10 home Test innings, amassing over 750 runs.
Since his Test debut in the West Indies, Jaiswal has been a standout performer for India. The 22-year-old has already scored three centuries, including two double hundreds, showcasing his potential as a future star in Indian cricket. In a five-match series against England earlier this year, he scored 712 runs, making him the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score more than 700 runs in a Test series. Jaiswal also set the record for being the quickest Indian to reach 1000 Test runs. His consistent form and record-breaking performances continue to set new benchmarks, marking him as one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket today.
